Welcome to China Residencies!  China Residencies is a non-profit platform operating a freely accessible database of artist residencies and work opportunities in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Next to this semiannual update for different funding opportunities, workshops and paper deadlines, conferences and working opportunities we also list active residencies + their open calls under 'residencies'. You can find interviews with artists and residency directors in our 'news' section and feel free to look up the artists we have previously worked or collaborated with in the 'artists' section!

Here's a list of deadlines for residencies, call for papers, job opportunities & lots of different things you can apply for that have a connection to China.


RESIDENCIES + FUNDING: 

The Goethe Institute is funding up to 25,000 euros for coproductions by artists in the fields of theatre, dance, music, performance art, and digital media between Germany and non-European countries including China. Apply before April 15.

Bosch-Siftung's Crossing Borders funds up to 15,000 euros in international research trips for authors, filmmakers and photographers from German-speaking countries as well as China (including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao), India, Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam. Apply before April 30.

Open call for UK-China Connection through Culture Grants, made available through the British Council. More details here, must be China Now Member to apply.

Asia Discovers Asia Meeting for Contemporary Performance is having an open call for the collective residency program Artist Lab, an invitation for artists to meet, exchange ideas and invent new collaborative possibilities. Artists from all kinds of disciplines, with or have had community-based art practice and are interested in collaborative research, are invited to apply. Residency covers round-trip flights to Taipei, living allowance and accommodations  for the entire residency period (arrival on 22 July and departure on 19 August 2019). The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada is having an open call for its 2019-2020 Media Fellowship Program. It offers two up-and-coming and established Canadian journalists the opportunity to spend time in Asia researching and preparing stories for Canadian audiences. The Foundation will award two fellowships in 2019-20, each valued at up to C$10,000 for in-country travel and expenses, and coverage of trans-Pacific travel with support in part from Cathay Pacific Airways. Apply here before April 26, 2019.

The Sunny Art Prize competition is seeking submissions. It offers a selection of thirty artists the opportunity to take part in international activities, including exhibitions and a residency. Apply before June 30th, 2019. 

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is pleased to announce the launch of its 2019-2020 Media Fellowship Program. The program offers two up-and-coming and established journalists the opportunity to spend time in Asia researching and preparing stories for Canadian audience. Apply before April 26, 2019.

CAC Shanghai calls for proposal for their 2019 Spring Research and Creation Fellowship "Observer Mechanics: Interfacing Truth". The fellowship provides US$10,000 for the duration of three months. Apply before March 17th 23:59!

The Red Gate Residency in Beijing has a last-minute spot for its March residency! Red Gate Residency is an international artists residency program providing artists, curators, writers and academics with the opportunity to live and create work in China. Apply now.

Advance Art Museum is Changsha is calling for experimental and new media artists. They will select 3 residents for the month of April, with funding for domestic travel & materials. Apply before March 20th.

The Vidoetage and Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA) are now accepting applications from HK-based contemporary artists and practitioners working with moving image, for a fully funded, 6-week residency with CFCCA. The residency dates are from 16th July - 30th August 2019. Apply before Thursday 28th February 2019 17:00.

Khooshk, Red Gate and Organhaus are calling for Iranian and Chinese artists for a one month residency exchange in April & July - either at Beijing or Chongqing. Apply before January 30.

The W.O.W Project is looking for artists and makers for their Makers Residency, a 3-month long opportunity for a maker to refurbish 50+ year old shipping crate wood into a functional object for New York Chinatown residents. Apply before March 11th, 2019.

YAC in Tianjin is inviting artists for printmaking residencies.

Three Shadows in Beijing & Xiamen seeking photographers, filmmakers, video artists, and other new media creators. Apply anytime.

The Hong Kong Art Gallery Association's Artist Residency Abroad Funding Scheme provides up to HK$15,000 for Hong Kong artists seeking artist residencies abroad. Applications accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed quarterly, and artists should apply to their own residency programs prior to applying.

The Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia seeks proposals for guest curators working with contemporary and Asian American community-based projects, providing $1,000 honorarium and $1,500 in artists fees, travel costs and other expenses

Artists traveling on a #slowtrain to or in China can apply anytime for a virtual residency to takeover our Instagram account.

C-Platform and Mexcia Lab are looking for artists for their Lucitopia Residency Program as part of a cooperation with Green Art Lab Alliance (EU). Apply throughout the year. 



PAPERS, WORKSHOPS, RESEARCH:

Museum 2050 is calling for proposals for the "Defining Institutions: Proposals for Museums of the Future" symposium. Proposals are due to contact@museum2050.com by January 20, 2019. Read more here

The Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA) at Birmingham City University is hosting a call for papers for the 12th CCVA Annual Conference on the development of Chinese contemporary art in the context of social, cultural and urban transformations. Proposals are due by 1 February 2019 to ccva@bcu.ac.uk. Read more here

The Shenzhen Forum 2019, sponsored by the Shenzhen University (SZU) of China and the National Communication Association (NCA), is hosting an open call for project proposals to any of the three different tracks for this year, " Experiments in Communication Innovation," "Intersections in New Media and Health Communication," and "Digital Journalism Challenge." Deadline for submissions is Feb. 1st, 2019. More info can be found here.

Participants from Southeast Asia, East Asia and Asia Pacific are invited to apply to the Asian Arts Media Roundtable, a two-day meeting of arts editors, publishers, reviewers, arts journalists, critics, bloggers, podcasters, videocasters, academics and arts makers. Deadline is January 30th, 2019.
