For the second year running, China Residencies, I: project space and The Neighbourhood are calling for DJs, VJs, producers, artists, and performers to work in Beijing for a fully-funded two month residency in February & March 2019, in the ever-growing and increasingly idiosyncratic nightclub and electronic music communities in Beijing and China.

✨ this nightlife residency is

a safe space to celebrate each other and build together✨

✨此次夜生活驻留项目是相互尊重和硬件的安全之所✨

"You see the untapped potential of nightclubs as spaces in need of deeper consideration; you agree that the relationship between nightlife and contemporary art has not yet been fruitfully explored. As a producer or DJ, you extend what you do into the visual realm; and/or the visual art that you make is tied up with electronic music and nightclubs."

“你关注夜店尚未被开发的潜力和空间深层次思考的需求;你认为夜生活与当代艺术之间的关系尚未有成效的探索。作为制作人或者DJ,你尝试把所做的工作延展到视觉领域;或者你创作的视觉艺术与电子音乐或者夜店紧密相连。”

China Residencies, I: project space and The Neighbourhood will connect the resident with key protagonists who are leading the discourses on and fusion of visual art & nightclub culture. During the residency, there will be opportunities to perform, exhibit and experiment with the local scene. For its second edition, The Nightlife Residency has partnered with Beijing club Zhao dai and contemporary art museum M Woods, allowing the selected resident to explore their spaces through exhibitions, club nights, workshops, talks, projects, etc.

    ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ FAQ !!! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

    ✨ When’s the deadline? ✨
Friday, December 5th at midnight in your timezone.

    ✨ Can I submit late? ✨
We’d really rather you did not! If your application is late, we can’t guarantee that the jury will have time to review it.

    ✨Who’s on the jury? ✨
Soraya Lutangu BONAVENTURE, inaugural Nightlife Residency resident
Anna Eschbach & Antonie Angerer from I: project space
Carmen Herold & Song Zhiqi , from Zhao Dai 招待所
Lhaga Koondhor aka Asian Eyez & Tom Mouna, from The Neighborhood
Kira Simon-Kennedy & Josue Chavez from China Residencies

    What went down last year?
Soraya produced a lot of music! Four of the six tracks on her just-released EP Mentor are ones she started in China. She says: “The title of the EP is deeply inspired by the residency, it’s about learning with people — finding a mentor and learning and teaching other. It’s about the kinds of cultural exchange that happens in the club scene. I felt it there. More so than in Europe, where we have huge egos and we all want to me the most booked artist, always on tour…. In Beijing, we were so honest with each other about what else we wanted to learn and get better at, and what skill sets we want to develop as artists.” Read the rest of the interview here:

✨ Can I put in a good word for my friends? ✨
We’re against nepotism, so, in short, no. We can check to see if we received their application, but we read proposals anonymously for the first round, so trying to influence our jury members won’t really work.

✨ Do you have any general tips for how to apply? ✨
Read this 10 step guide on Applying For Things for starts!

✨ When will the residency be announced? ✨
We’ll publish a list of finalists by December 10th and announce the chosen resident in early January.

    • ✨ Will you give feedback if we don’t get it? ✨

    • Yes! It might take us a while, but we promise we’ll answer any *specific* questions you have.

      • ✨ I don’t have a credit card but I’d still like to contribute the suggested application fee. ✨

You can donate via PayPal or Bitcoin too! Thanks so much for supporting us so we can keep providing opportunities like this :)

✨ Will you reimburse the suggested donation application fee if I’m not chosen? ✨
No, all the fees go towards funding travel for this residency, and we really appreciate all your contributions, we couldn’t do this without you. Also, the donations are tax-deductible if you live in the US!

✨ I’m not free in February & March - will you be doing this again? ✨
We hope so! If enough people are interested (and if we can find more generous sponsors!), we’d love to do this more often.

✨ Who is paying for this?
I: project space & China Residencies, with some additional support from our friends at Zhao Dai 招待所 & M Woods 木木美术馆.
