For our inaugural edition of the 东 x 东南亚 East x South East Asia Residency Knowledge Exchange, we are proud to invite Coral Lu of Dong Dong & Lulu (China), Syar Alia of Rimbun Dahan (Malaysia), Anna Lovecchio of NTU Centre for Contemporary Art (Singapore), Emma Lee of Kiwisual (China), and Wong Ker Sin of East Coast (Malaysia).
OPEN CALL:
People who run residencies work tirelessly to support the artists they host, and often don't get the chance to take a step back and reflect on the future of their organziations, the nature of their work, or even simply catch up with colleagues. The cost of international travel and the difficulty in obtaining visas adds to the challenge of creating meaningful and lasting international exchange between mainland China and the rest of the world. Last year, with the support of Transnational Dialogues, we launched our first Residency Knowledge Exchange to help a young arts administrator from China, Hu Xinru 胡欣茹, Red Gate Residency's coordinator, travel abroad for the first time to meet with cultural practitioners in the UK.
This year, we are calling for all residency directors, coordinators, and administrators working in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan and in the South East Asian countries of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, The Philippines, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, East Timor, Brunei, as well as islands & territories in the region, to apply for one to two week residencies at Red Gate in Beijing this spring to exchange best practices, devise innovative solutions to common challenges, and share strategies for increasing cultural exchange within the region.
This opportunity is an initiative of Red Gate Gallery's founder and director Brian Wallace, Red Gate Residency's director Jennifer Lindsay & coordinator Zhao Fu Le, and China Residencies' co-founder & director Kira Simon-Kennedy as a result of Res Artis' Meeting of Southeast Asian Arts Residencies in 2016 at Rimbun Dahan in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Selected residency staff will be provided accommodation at Red Gate Residency, transportation to and from the airport, and invitations to participate in all residency activities (welcome dinners, studio visits, artist talks, open studio exhibitions). China Residencies will also facilitate introductions to artist-run spaces, galleries, museums, and cultural institutions in Beijing.Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until April 28th. Apply now or directly in the form below.
